High art this movie is not. But there are some great things here. The feeling you get is that Cameron was trying to make a film which combined the intellectualism and poetry of 2001, with the drama and tension of an action movie. What you end up with is not a totally unsuccessful hybrid, in fact, there are some extremely well-written moments.

As with most James Cameron movies, the effects are groundbreaking. But what makes this film worth the trouble is a great second act. Unfortunately, it ultimately suffers because the script has holes a truck could drive through. It is really unfortunate that one of the last moments of the film is besmirched with one of the greatest cop-outs in film history. In fact, this film has two of my prime examples of lazy scripting. The end, which is obvious, and the moment that the characters explain (to the audience) why it is necessary to show some tits.
