Comments:
One of Kubrick’s most criticized films (not including the unbearable criticisms of Eyes Wide Shut) for it’s apparent misogyny (the only women in the film are whores or enemy soldiers). The consensus seems to be that the first half of the film, which takes place in boot camp, is superior to the second half, which is in Vietnam. In fact, the consensus seems to be that the two “halves” are seperate films. I’m of the opinion that that consensus should be disregarded. Without the Vietnam section, the entire boot camp section becomes a superbly crafted and tightly constructed drama. With the Vietnam section intact, the film explodes into a profoundly disturbing and riveting argument on the psychological diaspora of Disney’s America.
