| During World War One, the French General staff orders that a certain hill be taken, even though the general in charge has expressed trepidation, that the taking of the hill is impossible and not worth it givn the amount o casualties it will incur. Faced with overwhelming odds, the troops break of the attack in the middle. The general feels that this is an act of treason and cowardice and that three men should be chosen from the ranks and courtmarshalled and executed as a sybol.
